Seward and Longfellow have provided matching funds for the reintroduction of
native plants (pre settlement ecotype). I attended the workshop at East Lake
Library today with a 80 other native plant enthusiasts. The Wed. workshop at
Matthews had approx. 60 people.
It is an excellent program funded by the Mississippi Watershed Management
Organization.
What a great way to start the first day of spring.
I am hoping that everyone who receives this list will send a post about what
they would like to see in Seward or other topic they would like to discuss.
One great thing about planting native plants is that it means less mowing.
Habitat, water quality, and plant diversity are also enhanced.
But I can't help wonder how much quieter and how much less air pollution
there would be if Seward could get rid of gas lawn mowers and leaf blowers.
Those two cycle gas mowers are incredibly polluting -approx. 5% of total air
pollution. I believe California banned leaf blowers because of air pollution.
If you don't have all that Kentucky bluegrass you don't have to mow. If you
have a little grass you can use a push mower. If you have too much for a push
mower you can use a really quiet rechargeable electric mower. If you live in
the high-rises and large rental units you can advocate for more green space that
has more native plants and less mowed lawn.
Re: Wireless
The wireless access signal located in all our neighborhood parks has been
something that Park Board Commissioner John Erwin (and Seward resident) has been
working on. It would be great if he could give us an update and get support
for his work.
Thanks,
Scott Vreeland
