He will be working with parents of Holy Rosary youth to develop wholesome activities and encourage spiritual development. His name is Mike Dale and his e-mail address is mdale@integraonline.com. (Phone 952-226-1965). Previously Mr. Dale was a teacher in Ecuador. (Many of the young families at Holy Rosary are Hispanic.) Also Holy Rosary has two interns who are studying to be priests working with us this summer. Both of them will be working on social justice issues in the community. One of them will be working at a homeless shelter at St. Stephen's Church, I believe. The other intern has a criminal justice background. Holy Rosary Catholic Church is at 2424 - 18th Ave., So., Minneapolis 55404 Phone - (612) 724-3651 The name of our new Pastor is Father Jose Santiago. He, too, has a background in social work. We want to take action before things get serious. Having committee meetings and trying to work the system will not accomplish this. Later today I will begin distributing a petition to block club leaders. It asks SNG, the park, the police and our neighbors to take certain actions to increase communication and reduce crime. (For a preview see Petition 1 at http://www.geocities.com/takhistos/Plan.html) We hope to have at least 200 signatures before the Matthews ice cream social on July 11th. The idea behind this approach is to show that the community is united in the desire to prevent and respond to crime. I hope that you will read and sign the petition and encourage your neighbors to do so as well. If you are willing to do a little doorknocking please contact me and I will get you a petition form. Thank you for your time. Nathan Mitchell __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! I should clarify that with the following: I coach track in coordination with Matthews Park, where I referee, was once employed, and where I hang out with the staff several times per week. Until my recent resignation I was VP of the SNG board of directors. I am delighted by most of the staff and board, though the organization is seriously ineffective and out of touch. I have been delighted with the performance of one park police officer in particular, and I intend to coordinate a 'block thank you' for something she did recently. In other words, I am trying to come up with solutions, and that means stirring the pot. My suggestions come from intimate knowledge of SNG and the park, and in some cases from staff themselves. I have every intention of supporting public agencies as well as holding them accountable. Please read the petition, which does not address the Transitions school. Even better, discuss it with a staffmember at the appropriate organization. If you still don't believe the police and SNG should inform residents, that SNG staff should listen to their governing committees or that park staff should demand respectful behavior from visitors then don't sign it! I dug out 5/7 meeting minutes and found the following ideas/ recommendations. How are we doing after 2 months? GROUP 1 IDEAS 1 Produce a document guiding people to effective intervention and use of 911. I have not seen this document. If you want detailed info it is on my web site or ask SNG for the New Alley block club manual. 2 Park signs that detail rules. I have not seen any. 3 T-shirts, slogans, basketball promotions. ? Group 2 A Have Hennepin County Probations help monitor the park Sundays. Probably happening. B Restorative justice ? C Matthews Park Advisory Council Not happening. D Teen Council connected with Advisory Council SNG youth program coordinatoir doesn't want the teen council to meet in the summer. E Neighbors monitor park and use the listserve How many postings have you received? F Post rules Again, I have not seen any. G Park Walkers ? H Ensure "repercussions for bad behavior" ? I Listserve again - "create a baseline" I assume this means how many complaints per unit of time. Has anyone reported anything? J Clean Park - "Bug Park Board to clean it up" ? K Use Hennepin County cars to patrol park Same as A? L Help families, address poverty and politics, etc. Okay, this will take more than 2 months. My points are... #1 No decisions were made. #2 These outcomes are hard to measure. #3 Responsibility was not assigned. #4 They have generally not happened. Holding a meeting is not a solution. This is where my neighbors part ways with SNG, and that is why we have a petition circulating. Nathan Mitchell P.S. There are supposed to be 50 or so people on these lists. Does anyone have anything to say?? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo!
