Sandra Jarvie Canadian Council of Natural Mothers PLEASE DISTRIBUTE FREELY ************** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE************* WOMEN, THE BLUES AND VIDEOTAPE On Tuesday evening, September 23, 2003 at 7:30 pm EST, Bravo Canada ( http://www.bravo.ca) will air Episode 9 of the series "taLkiN bLuEs" ( http://www.talkinblues.com) As you may know, Bravo is the most respected and watched privately funded arts channel in both the US and Canada. It is known for its informed and sensitive approach to all the arts, and is acknowledged as the premiere arts channel both inside and outside the artistic community. This is "taLkiN bLuEs" second year on Bravo. The episode is titled "Like A Bullet" , and the relevant segment "Young Women's Blues." The segment was filmed, edited, produced and directed by Suzie Kidnap, and is a gift of the heart to the firstmother and adoption reform community. It features fabulous singer-songwriter Beki Brindle ( www.bekibrindle.com) performing her tune, "Young Women's Blues." "Young Women's Blues" deals with one of life's most difficult situations; the heart wrenching experience of a woman who loses her child to adoption. Intercut with Beki's performance is commentary from two women who are also veterans of child loss to adoption, Laura Lewis and Sandra Falconer Pace. Laura is a former CUB leader http://www.cubirthparents.org) and Sandra is a Director of the Canadian Council of Natural Mothers http://nebula.on.ca/canbmothers/ The commentary consists of vivid personal recollections of the maternity home and birth experience, as well as succinct observations on the surrender process itself. These have been culled from many hours of taped interviews for a full length documentary called "Love And War In Adoption." "Love And War," which is slated for a late 2004 premiere is Kidnap's full length, documentary, directorial debut. (Kidnap has produced and directed numerous short films and music videos. ) "Young Women's Blues" was chosen for the film because of its accurate reflection of the emotions of a woman facing this most heart wrenching situation. Kidnap, who also is a veteran of child loss to adoption, had this to say about the segment: " Most often, shows which focus on adoption do so from either the child's or the adopting family's point of view. Most often, the woman whose child is surrendered for adoption is relegated to the background. Her voice and experience are seldom heard, and her observations about the process are most often minimized. As a group, older firstmothers were without a doubt, the marginalized, powerless and far too often, unwilling participants in a transaction which exploited, then discarded them. And that pattern continues to this day in the media, in the chat rooms and news groups, and in the social consciousness of entire nations. "This segment focuses on the emotions and experiences of these women, bringing a valuable balancing viewpoint to any discussion of pertinent adoption issues, such as open records, the concept of 'choice' in adoption and fully informed consent, which should include extensive discussions about the lifelong effects of surrender on the mothers who lose their children. Although not an open records piece per se, this segment can easily become a springboard to that discussion in other media and in support groups as well.
