We'll start by trying to get some agreement on what the purpose of a political party is. Is it to win elections? Advance agendas? Build movements? We'll then rate the parties on how well they're performing those functions. Two weeks later we'll look at how other states handle various party functions, from endorsing to caucuses to instant run off to fusion and evaluate whether any of these methods improve the functioning of parties. How do you get parties to change and is it worth it? will be the focus of the last of our series. Minnesota has a wealth of experience, from the development of various third parties to merger of the Farmer Labor Party with the Democratic party. Please join us for our first group discussion with Larry Jacobs, U of M Political Science professor addressing What Is the Function of a Political Party & How Well Are the Parties Performing? on Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 7:30 AM at the Louisiana Cafe (Selby & Dale), St. Paul. ------=_NextPart_000_007E_01C31618.835F6880 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
