For those of you who have made comments, criticisms, complaints or
suggestions about party politics, how they work and how they don't work, in
the past six months, the Mary McEvoy Discussion group is sponsoring a three
part series to examine politics, parties and our political process.
We'll start by trying to get some agreement on what the purpose of a
political party is. Is it to win elections? Advance agendas? Build
movements? We'll then rate the parties on how well they're performing those
functions.
Two weeks later we'll look at how other states handle various party
functions, from endorsing to caucuses to instant run off to fusion and
evaluate whether any of these methods improve the functioning of parties.
How do you get parties to change and is it worth it? will be the focus of
the last of our series. Minnesota has a wealth of experience, from the
development of various third parties to merger of the Farmer Labor Party
with the Democratic party.
