Authorized by the Board last January the Committee has expanded to 35 people. At one recent meeting Dr. David Heistad, Director of Research, Evaluation and Assessment at the Minneapolis Schools brought charts showing Minneapolis graduation and drop out rates, proficiency in math, and early reading scores. Early literacy has been improving among all groups with some gains also from all day kindergarten. He also showed outcomes for students who chose suburban schools. Joe Nathan brought information about the " The Hope Collaboration", a new group with about two dozen organizations participating. This group is promoting examples of successful schools. Earlier in May they sponsored a community discussion featuring Sharon Johnson, Principal of Withrow University High School in Cincinnati one example of a successful high school. The committee will be exploring the benefits of early childhood intervention, the concept of the Age 3 Grade 3 school, and the effectiveness of existing programs.
