DFL History Former Foundation president and political science professor Don Ostrom divides DFL history into five layers. These are reflected in the plans for our history series. Layer One - 1944-52: Merger and HHH elected to senate. On March 18 Al Eisele talked about his interviews with many of the principals of that era some of whom were in the audience that day. The dialogue and stories that evolved during the Q and A greatly enriched the whole program. Layer Two - 1954-64: Triumph and Conflict - The DFL Party in the 1950s featuring Honorable Walter F. Mondale Honorable Gerald W. Heaney Don and Arvonne Fraser Jack Puterbaugh Sunday, April 29 ? 7 to 9 PM Ukranian Event Center - 301 Main Street NE - Minneapolis On Sunday, June 10, we'll change our focus from elections and party development to crucial issues which inspired the founders and shaped the DFL agenda including civil rights. The program is still taking shape, but mark your calendars for Sunday, June 10 ? 7 to 9 PM - also at the Ukranian Event Center. In the fall we'll have three events which focus on Layer Three - 1966-1972 and Layer Four - 1974-1976. The first two events will focus on elections and the party. The third on our impact on important issues including the Vietnam War. Layer Five covers 1978 to the present. We've not yet decided whether we will develop a program on this era or wait until its history has seasoned a bit. These history events are being recorded. YOU and DFL History We'd like to include YOU in our history. Please email us anecdotes which you think others will enjoy. We'll include most if not all in future issues of IdeaNews and are seeking a way to archive them for future generations. Will this motivate some of you younger folk to interview your elders? Email as a reply to this email or send directly to vicio@visi.com. Issues The Economic Policy Institute has undertaken a program, The Agenda for Shared Prosperity, in order to advance a comprehensive, understandable, and workable economic program. Their papers are available at http://www.sharedprosperity.org. Seven reports released so far include health care, globalization, rights of workers, immigration and A New Social Contract. Good fodder for healthy debate. http://www.dfleducationfoundation.org About the Foundation The DFL Education Foundation began in 1985 with an endowment from Barney Allen, the Democratic Farmer Labor Party's first candidate for governor in 1944. The foundation's goal is to promote informed participation in politics, through citizen education, leadership development, and public discussion of political issues. Nearly all the work is accomplished by volunteers and supported by individual contributions. We are grateful for any contribution you have sent or can send. They are tax deductible and can be mailed to our treasurer, Brian Hanninen, 2213 Milwaukee Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55404.
